Gen Z’s Voting Perspective Outline

Gen Z’s Voting Perspective Outline

1 – Goal: Get a feel for Gen Z’s political outlook; how they feel about the Canadian political landscape, what they think will happen in the next year or two, which political parties they support and why…

2 – Audience: Gen Z, people wanting to learn about Gen Z (older generations, Gen X and Boomers)

3 – Core Information:

  • Determine if they voted in the past election; many young people don’t view voting as important as their parents do.
  • Who did they vote for? Why?
  • Voting reasoning, voting importance

4 – Detailed outline:

Audio: news show… intro and outro music but silent background during interviews

Intro

  • Narration including quick elections facts:
    • In 2019, 53.9% of the population aged 18-24 voted (elections Canada)
    • According to data collected by Elections Canada, following the 2019 election (2021 elections stats are not yet released)
    • Young voters are less interested in voting and are the least satisfied with government, compared to older generations. “Before the call of the election in 2019, youth aged 18 to 24 were less likely to view voting as a duty (64%) than as a choice, compared with electors aged 25 and older (74%)”
    • This seems a bit hypocritical to me, as I was raised to value of ‘if you don’t vote, you don’t get an opinion on the election results or government in power. But considering 18-24yr old’s have less confidence and less trust in the electoral process, it makes complete sense that they wouldn’t want to vote.
    • Overall, Gen Z has low trust in the accuracy of the results
